In the world of coin manufacturing, perfection is the standard, which makes the dramatic exceptions incredibly captivating. This copper Lincoln Cent represents a striking manufacturing anomaly, having been struck at least seventy-five percent off-center during the minting process. Because the blank planchet was not properly aligned with the dies at the moment of impact, only a fraction of the intended design was transferred to the metal, leaving a large portion of the coin entirely blank and smooth. On the small area where the dies did make contact, fragments of the iconic design and inscriptions remain visible. Legible portions of the classic obverse and reverse elements, such as parts of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the denomination ONE CENT, can sometimes be traced near the edge. Each of these misaligned copper cents is entirely unique, offering a vivid, physical demonstration of the high-speed mechanical processes used by the United States Mint.
