Struck during the tumultuous decade from 310 to 301 BC, this ancient silver drachm from Macedon represents a classic numismatic type issued under the name of Alexander the Great. Despite its immense age, this particular specimen survives in an extraordinary Mint State condition, preserving the fine details of its classical artistry just as it left the ancient workshop. The obverse of the coin displays a powerful right-facing profile of the hero Heracles, draped in his signature lion skin. This iconic imagery was a staple of Macedonian coinage, projecting strength and divine lineage. On the reverse, the king of the gods, Zeus, sits on his throne facing left. In his hands, he holds a sceptre and an eagle, symbols of his supreme authority. To the right of the seated deity, the Greek inscription 'ALEXANDROY' is clearly visible, marking the coin as an issue of the Alexander type. While individual specimens of this series feature varying monograms on the reverse, each coin in this issue contains approximately 0.12 troy ounces of silver, serving as a tangible link to the ancient Mediterranean world.
