Dating back to the era of 336 to 300 BC, this silver tetradrachm from ancient Macedon offers a direct connection to the classical world. The coin represents the influential coinage issued under the ruler Alexander III, commonly known as Alexander the Great. Struck in silver, these substantial pieces typically weigh between 16 to 17.5 grams and measure 27 to 31 millimeters in diameter, representing a major currency of the ancient Mediterranean. The obverse of the coin features a detailed right-facing bust of the mythical hero Heracles, who is depicted wearing his signature headpiece fashioned from the skin of the Nemean lion. This powerful image is paired on the reverse with a depiction of Zeus, the king of the gods, seated on a throne facing left. In his hands, Zeus holds both a sceptre and an eagle, symbols of his supreme authority. Each coin features the Greek inscription ALEXANDROY on the reverse, alongside various monograms that can differ from piece to piece. Preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, these ancient silver pieces allow us to appreciate the artistry of ancient die-engravers and the enduring legacy of Macedonian design.
