This ancient bronze sestertius offers a direct connection to the turbulent third century of the Roman Empire. Struck during the years 238 to 244 AD, the coin represents the brief reign of Emperor Gordian III. He ascended to the imperial throne at the remarkably young age of fifteen, following a lineage of rule as the grandson of Gordian I and the nephew of Gordian II. Because of his youth, actual governing authority during his administration was held by his Praetorian Prefects, first under Timisitheus and later under Philip the Arab. Gordian III married Tranquillina during his time in power, which ultimately ended when he was killed, clearing the path for Philip I to claim the throne. The obverse of this copper-alloy coin displays a right-facing portrait bust of the young emperor. Surrounding his likeness is the legible Latin inscription IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG. On the reverse, the design depicts the classical deity Apollo seated and facing left, holding a branch. This specific specimen has been preserved in a circulated state and certified as Very Fine, maintaining the distinct artistry of the ancient Roman mints.
