During the height of the Roman Empire, large bronze coins known as sestertii circulated widely, serving as both everyday currency and a canvas for imperial presentation. This particular bronze piece dates from the reign of Marcus Aurelius, who ruled Rome from 161 to 180 AD. Weighing approximately 23 grams, the substantial copper alloy coin offers a tangible connection to the administration of the philosopher emperor. The obverse side of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Marcus Aurelius adorned with a laurel wreath. On the reverse, a standing figure is depicted facing left. The fields of the reverse display the letters S and C, which traditionally stood for Senatus Consulto, indicating the coin was minted by the authority of the Roman Senate.
