In the early years of the United States Mint, the nation's silver coinage carried elegant, hand-carved details that reflected a young republic establishing its identity. The 1803 Draped Bust silver dollar stands as a remarkable survivor from this foundational era, minted in Philadelphia with a composition of 89.24 percent silver. This particular variety is distinguished by the specific shape of the final digit in the date, known to enthusiasts as the Large 3. The obverse of this historic dollar displays a graceful profile of Lady Liberty, her hair flowing loosely and draped in fabric, with the word LIBERTY positioned above her. Below her portrait, the year 1803 is clearly struck. This design was the work of Robert Scot, who sought to capture a sense of freedom and dignity on the face of the nation's largest silver denomination. On the reverse, a grand heraldic eagle dominates the field. The eagle holds a bundle of arrows in one claw and a leafy olive branch in the other, symbolizing both defense and peace. A banner draped across the shield bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, while the surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Backed by the United States government, this coin represents a fascinating window into early American craftsmanship, preserved today in Very Fine condition.
