1811 Bust Half Dollar Fine (Small 8)

In the early nineteenth century, the Philadelphia Mint produced silver half dollars that circulated widely in a young United States. This 1811 issue, struck in 89.24 percent silver, belongs to the celebrated Capped Bust series. It contains approximately 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal and displays the distinctive Small 8 variety in its date. This particular specimen has survived in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that passed through many hands over two centuries ago. The obverse features a left-facing bust of Liberty wearing a cloth cap, with the word LIBERTY inscribed upon her band. Thirteen stars flank the portrait, representing the original colonies, while the 1811 date is positioned at the bottom. The reverse displays a classic heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation's readiness for defense and desire for peace. Above the eagle, a scroll bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination is indicated at the bottom as 50 C. A delicate, very light toning has developed along the outer edges of the coin, framing the historic design with a touch of natural color.
