In the early decades of United States coinage, the half dime served as a vital piece of daily commerce. The 1832 Capped Bust half dime is a remarkable survivor from this era, struck in 0.8924 fine silver with a total silver weight of 0.0387 troy ounces. Designed by William Kneass, this diminutive coin showcases the intricate artistry that characterized American money in the early nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom, with the word LIBERTY clearly inscribed upon her headband. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the date 1832 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, an American eagle is depicted with a shield draped across its chest. The eagle clutches an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons, representing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. Above the eagle, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is displayed on a scroll, while the denomination is indicated at the bottom as 5 C. This specific coin has survived in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining the core elements of its historic design.
