The design, created by John Reich, showcases the nation's evolving identity through bold, classical imagery. The front of the coin features Liberty facing left, her hair flowing beneath a draped Phrygian cap, which is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her, representing the original colonies, with the date 1833 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a spread-winged eagle clutches an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace paired with a readiness for defense.
