The year 1835 saw the creation of a silver dime that captures the spirit of early American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this ten-cent piece is composed of 89.24 percent silver, containing 0.0775 troy ounces of the precious metal. With a total mintage of 485,000 pieces, this specific coin survives today in Fine condition, showing honest wear that speaks to its long journey through nineteenth-century commerce. Designed by John Reich, the obverse of the dime presents Liberty facing left, her hair flowing beneath a draped Phrygian cap. A band across her cap is inscribed with the word LIBERTY, while thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies. The date 1835 is positioned clearly beneath the bust. On the reverse, an American eagle stands proud with a shield draped across its chest. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows, symbolizing readiness. Above the eagle, a scroll displays the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, while the surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
