Introduced in the late 1830s and struck until nearly the end of the nineteenth century, this silver half dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. The design, crafted by Christian Gobrecht, was produced across multiple facilities, including the main mint in Philadelphia and the branch mints in San Francisco, New Orleans, and Carson City. Each coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of silver, minted with a purity of 90 percent. The obverse side presents a detailed depiction of Liberty in a seated position. She holds a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests upon a shield. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is shown perched on a branch, grasping three arrows in its talons, with a shield positioned across its chest. This half dollar remains a fascinating study in nineteenth-century artistry and minting history.
