Struck in 1877 at the San Francisco Mint, this silver half dollar belongs to the classic Liberty Seated series, a staple of nineteenth-century American commerce. This particular coin has survived in an Almost Good state of preservation, displaying the heavy wear and honest character of a piece that circulated extensively during a dynamic era of expansion. It contains 0.3575 troy ounces of actual silver content within its 90 percent silver alloy. The obverse features the classic representation of Liberty seated upon a rock. In her hands, she supports a staff topped by a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a shield. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle perched upon a branch, clutching three arrows in its talons with a shield displayed across its chest. This design, created by Christian Gobrecht, was minted during a year that saw a total production of 5,356,000 of these half dollars in San Francisco, as indicated by the 'S' mint mark.
