The year 1916 marked the conclusion of an era for United States silver coinage, making this Denver Mint quarter a compelling subject for study. Struck in 90 percent fine silver, the coin contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Its creation is attributed to Charles Barber, whose artistic vision defined multiple denominations of American currency during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. On the obverse, a dignified profile of Lady Liberty faces right. She wears a laurel wreath atop her head, which is also adorned with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. The word LIBERTY is visible on her headband, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned above her, flanked by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread, bearing a protective shield across its chest. In its beak, the eagle holds a banner inscribed with E PLURIBUS UNUM. Its talons grasp both an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows, representing strength and defense. The Denver mint mark, a small D, is located below the eagle, indicating its origin at the Colorado facility.
