In 1922, the United States honored the centenary of Ulysses S. Grant's birth with a special commemorative gold dollar. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin features a modest mintage of only 5,000 pieces, making it a scarce and fascinating artifact of early twentieth-century American numismatics. It was released alongside a silver half dollar, making Grant one of the few historical figures depicted on two different commemorative coins of the era. Designed by the noted artist Laura Gardin Fraser, the obverse of the coin presents a profile bust of Ulysses S. Grant, flanked by his name and the dual dates of 1822 and 1922. The reverse showcases a detailed depiction of the humble frame house in Point Pleasant, Ohio, where the general and president was born. This particular version is known as the "No Star" variety, distinguished by the absence of a star in the field on the obverse. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains 0.0483 troy ounces of pure precious metal. Its inscriptions include the traditional national mottos "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," along with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "ONE DOLLAR."
