The year 1932 marked a major transition in United States coinage with the introduction of the Washington quarter, replacing the Standing Liberty design. This particular silver coin, minted in San Francisco, represents the very first year of the iconic series. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.1788 troy ounces, this piece has survived the decades in Very Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining its essential design details. Designed by John Flanagan, the obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of George Washington, the nation's first president. The profile is accompanied by the classic national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the inaugural date of 1932. This simple yet powerful portrait became an enduring symbol of American pocket change, lasting for decades. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows in its talons above a pair of olive branches. The traditional Latin motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, is inscribed above the eagle, while the country name and the denomination, written as QUARTER DOLLAR, frame the central design. The small 'S' mint mark below the olive branch indicates its origin at the San Francisco Mint, making it a highly recognizable and historically significant issue from the debut year of the series.
