In 1932, the United States introduced a new circulating quarter dollar that would become an enduring icon of American pocket change. This inaugural issue, struck in 90% fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, marked the debut of the Washington Quarter series. The coin contains approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal, combining historical artistry with intrinsic value. Designed by sculptor John Flanagan, the obverse presents a dignified, left-facing portrait of George Washington. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is positioned beside his profile, with the date 1932 anchored at the bottom. This clean, classical depiction of the nation's first president established a design tradition that would span decades. The reverse displays a bold heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, perched upon a bundle of arrows. Beneath the arrows, an olive branch curves upward, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside the strength to defend it. Arcing above the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," while the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR" is clearly struck along the bottom rim.
