In 1932, the United States introduced a new quarter design that would become a staple of American pocket change for generations. This inaugural year of the Washington Quarter series, struck in 90 percent silver, presents a historic transition in the nation's coinage. The Philadelphia Mint produced these pieces with a silver content of 0.17875 troy ounces, establishing a standard that endured for decades. The obverse of this quarter displays the left-facing profile of George Washington, modeled by sculptor John Flanagan. Above the presidential portrait, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST sits to the left of his neck, with the date 1932 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, Flanagan created a powerful heraldic design featuring an eagle with outspread wings. The majestic bird is perched upon a bundle of arrows, which are bound together above an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR frame the eagle, with the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM positioned just above the bird's head.
