1934 Washington Quarter Good/VF

In 1934, the United States Mint continued a relatively new tradition by striking the Washington Quarter, a twenty-five cent denomination that has since become a staple of American pocket change. This early issue, struck in Philadelphia, is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving today in Good or better condition, these circulated pieces carry the honest wear of a coin that actively passed through the hands of Americans during a pivotal decade. The obverse of the coin presents the left-facing profile of George Washington, the nation's first president. Positioned alongside his portrait is the familiar national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," along with the 1934 date of manufacture. This design was created by sculptor John Flanagan, whose work established the visual identity of the quarter for decades to come. On the reverse, Flanagan rendered a powerful heraldic eagle. The bird is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows in its talons above a pair of olive branches, representing both strength and peace. The traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is also integrated into this detailed reverse design, completing a classic piece of twentieth-century American coinage.
