Struck in 1935 to mark three centuries of Connecticut history, this silver half dollar stands out as a remarkable example of early twentieth-century American coinage. The coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of silver, minted in Philadelphia with a purity of 90 percent. This particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, showing only minor signs of wear from its time in circulation. The obverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of the famous Charter Oak, a historic tree that served as a symbol of American independence. This design was modeled after an oil painting by Charles DeWolf Brownell, capturing the sprawling branches of the ancient oak. The inscriptions on this side include the name of the state, the commemorative dates of 1635 to 1935, and the words THE CHARTER OAK. On the reverse, the coin transitions to a highly stylized, modern aesthetic. A powerful eagle with folded wings stands atop a rocky block, rendered in a bold Art Deco style. The traditional mottoes, including E PLURIBUS UNUM, are integrated into the design, completing a coin that beautifully bridges natural history and modern artistic expression.
