The 1938-S Washington quarter represents a classic era of United States coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this twenty-five cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. It survives today in Very Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that once circulated actively through the American economy. Designed by sculptor John Flanagan, the obverse of the coin presents a left-facing portrait of George Washington, the nation's first president. This iconic profile is accompanied by the traditional national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1938 year of manufacture. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This central image is surrounded by the country's name, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR, and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM, which translates to "Out of many, one."
