The 1938 Washington quarter represents a classic era of United States coinage, struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint. This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the crisp lines and artistic depth of its original design. Containing 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal, the coin is both a physical piece of silver and a canvas of mid-twentieth-century American artistry. On the obverse, the profile of George Washington faces left, flanked by the national mottoes. The word LIBERTY is boldly inscribed above his portrait, while the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST sits quietly below his chin. The year 1938 is clearly struck at the bottom, anchoring the piece in its historical moment. The reverse displays a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch beneath its talons. This central image is framed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. Just above the eagle, the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is proudly displayed, completing a design created by John Flanagan that remains one of the most recognizable in American numismatic history.
