In 1939, the Denver Mint produced a classic silver quarter that remains a fascinating artifact of mid-century American coinage. Struck in 90% fine silver, this twenty-five cent piece carries a precious metal content of 0.17875 troy ounces. Its survival in a grade of Good or better offers a tangible connection to the late thirties, displaying the honest wear of a coin that once circulated through the hands of everyday Americans. The obverse of the coin displays the left-facing portrait of George Washington, designed by artist John Flanagan. Accompanying the first president's likeness is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," along with the 1939 date. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This classic design is framed by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR," with the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" positioned just above the eagle's head.
