In 1940, the San Francisco Mint struck this silver quarter, a twenty-five cent piece composed of 90 percent silver and containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. This coin comes from the early decades of the Washington Quarter series, representing a durable era of American circulating coinage. The obverse features a left-facing profile of George Washington, the nation's first president. Above his portrait, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST sits to his left. The year 1940 is clearly stamped at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with wings spread, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, symbolizing both strength and peace. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. This enduring design was originally created by sculptor John Flanagan.
