1940-S Washington Quarter XF

0.1788 troy oz .900 1940 Extra Fine

Struck in 1940 at the San Francisco Mint, this Washington quarter represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Composed of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. It remains a compelling artifact of mid-twentieth-century design, surviving today in Extra Fine condition. The obverse presents a left-facing portrait of George Washington, the nation's first president. This profile, created by sculptor John Flanagan, is accompanied by the inscriptions of "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" flanking the bust. On the reverse, Flanagan composed a powerful heraldic scene. A spread-winged eagle clutches a bundle of arrows in its talons, positioned above a pair of olive branches. The design is framed by the national identification "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR" along the rim.
