On the obverse, the dignified left-facing profile of George Washington dominates the field. This iconic portrait is accompanied by the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1940 year of issue. The design was originally sculpted by John Flanagan, whose artistic vision has graced the quarter dollar for decades. The reverse displays a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. In its talons, the eagle grips a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. Above the eagle, the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while the surrounding legends identify the issuing authority as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and denote the face value as ONE QUARTER DOLLAR.
