In 1942, the United States Mint produced a twenty-five cent coin that remains a classic example of American coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this Washington quarter contains approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of precious metal. Rendered in an Almost Uncirculated grade, the coin retains much of its original detail and luster from the era of the Second World War. The obverse of the quarter displays the left-facing profile of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This portrait, created by designer John Flanagan, is accompanied by the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 1942. On the reverse, a bold heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Above the eagle, the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while the surrounding text identifies the issuing nation as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and states the denomination as QUARTER DOLLAR.
