1942 Washington Quarter Gem Proof

0.1788 troy oz .900 1942 Proof

In 1942, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof-strike Washington quarters, representing a peak of mid-century American coinage craftsmanship before wartime priorities paused proof production for several years. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.17875 troy ounces, these pieces were crafted with polished dies to achieve a highly reflective, mirror-like surface and exceptionally sharp details. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of George Washington, a design created by sculptor John Flanagan. Accompanied by the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date 1942, the profile of the nation's first president stands out in crisp relief. On the reverse, Flanagan's powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with wings outspread, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This symbol of strength and peace is framed by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR."
