In 1942, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof Washington quarters, striking just 21,123 of these special pieces. Unlike standard circulating coinage, these specimens were crafted with polished dies and planchets to achieve extraordinary detail and a mirror-like finish. This particular coin has been graded in exceptional Proof 66 condition, highlighting the preservation of its sharp design elements over the decades. The obverse of the quarter features the classic left-facing portrait of George Washington. Above his profile, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, rests directly under his chin. The year 1942 is boldly struck at the bottom, anchoring the design. Composed of 90 percent silver with a metal content of 0.1788 troy ounces, the coin represents a high-quality example of United States mid-century silver coinage. On the reverse, a majestic eagle with outspread wings clutches a bundle of arrows above an olive branch. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR along the outer rim. Nestled just above the eagle's head is the traditional Latin motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM. Because this piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it bears no mint mark, leaving the space below the olive branch clean and uninterrupted.
