Struck during the height of the Second World War, this 1943 Washington quarter represents a fascinating era of American coinage. Minted in San Francisco, as indicated by the subtle S mint mark, the coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving in Extra Fine condition, it retains much of the crisp detail from its original production, allowing observers to appreciate the artistry of its mid-century design. The obverse displays the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, the nation's first president. This portrait is accompanied by the inscriptions of LIBERTY and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1943 year of issue. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This central image is framed by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR, alongside the traditional Latin motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM. The design was originally created by sculptor John Flanagan, and it remains one of the most recognizable motifs in United States numismatic history.
