1944-S Washington Quarter BU
Semi-Numismatic
1944-S Washington Quarter BU
During the height of the Second World War, the San Francisco Mint struck this 90 percent silver quarter. Now preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, the coin offers a vivid look at mid-century American coinage. Containing 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal, this quarter represents a time when silver circulated daily in the pockets of Americans. The obverse displays the sharp profile of George Washington, the nation's first president, facing left. This portrait, created by sculptor John Flanagan, is accompanied by the familiar inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" positioned in the left field. On the reverse, Flanagan's design features a powerful heraldic eagle. The bird is depicted with outspread wings, clutching a bundle of arrows in its talons above an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The San Francisco "S" mint mark is located beneath the center of the olive branch, just above the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR."
