In 1947, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a classic silver quarter that remains a fascinating artifact of mid-century America. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.17875 troy ounces, this twenty-five cent piece carries the weight and texture of a bygone era. The obverse of the coin displays a dignified left-facing profile of George Washington. This portrait, designed by sculptor John Flanagan, is accompanied by the bold inscription of "LIBERTY" above the portrait, and the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" positioned to the left. The year 1947 is anchored clearly at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows in its talons above a pair of olive branches. This classic symbol of strength and peace is framed by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "QUARTER DOLLAR".
