In 1950, the San Francisco Mint produced a classic piece of mid-century American coinage with this silver quarter. Struck from 90 percent pure silver, this twenty-five cent piece carries a metal content of 0.1788 troy ounces (specifically 0.17875 ounces of silver), representing a time when precious metal circulated daily in the pockets of the public. The obverse of the coin displays a profile of George Washington, the nation's first president. This familiar portrait was designed by John Flanagan. Accompanying the bust is the traditional American motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST", alongside the 1950 date. On the reverse, Flanagan's design features a heraldic eagle. The bird is depicted holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbols representing strength and peace.
