1952 Washington Quarter Proof (Superbird)

In 1952, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof Washington quarters that would later capture the imagination of variety collectors. This silver coin, struck with a purity of 90 percent, contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. While it shares the classic dimensions of the circulating quarter dollar of its era, its proof finish and a peculiar design anomaly set it apart. The obverse of the coin presents the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the traditional inscriptions of liberty and the national motto, alongside the 1952 date. It is the reverse of this specific coin that holds the true mystery. The design features a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. On this 'Superbird' variety, a distinct letter 'S' shape is clearly visible on the center of the eagle's chest. This unexpected mark, not part of the standard design, makes the 1952 proof issue a fascinating study in die preparation and minting history.
