In 1953, the Denver Mint produced this classic silver quarter, a circulating twenty-five cent piece that remains a favorite for observers of mid-century American coinage. Struck in 90% fine silver, the coin contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal, giving it a substantial weight and metallic resonance characteristic of United States circulating coinage from this era. The obverse of the coin displays a dignified portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, facing left. This iconic profile was created by sculptor John Flanagan. Above the portrait, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST sits quietly to the left of Washington's neck. The year 1953 is anchored at the bottom of the coin. On the reverse, Flanagan's design features a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings outstretched. The eagle clutches a bundle of arrows in its talons, positioned above an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The Denver mint mark, a small letter D, is located just below the center of the olive branch, marking its origin at the Colorado facility.
