In 1953, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited number of proof coins, showcasing the Washington quarter design with exceptional clarity and mirror-like surfaces. Struck in 90% silver, this mid-century issue contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. The proof striking process elevates the familiar circulating design into a work of numismatic art, highlighting the sharp contrasts and fine details of the engraving. The obverse of the coin presents the left-facing profile of George Washington, a design created by sculptor John Flanagan. Above the portrait, the word "LIBERTY" is inscribed, while the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" rests to the left of Washington's neck. The year 1953 is clearly struck at the bottom of the coin. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide. The eagle grips a bundle of arrows in its talons, positioned above a pair of crossed olive branches, symbolizing both strength and peace. The inscriptions on this side include the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" placed above the eagle, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR" framing the central design.
