1954-S Washington Quarter AU
In 1954, the San Francisco Mint produced a classic piece of mid-century American currency with this Washington silver quarter. Struck in 90 percent silver, this twenty-five cent piece represents a transitional era in American coinage, combining precious metal content with a design that became a staple of daily commerce. The obverse of the coin displays the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, the nation's first president. This portrait is accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the year 1954 anchored at the bottom. The design was originally created by John Flanagan, whose work has defined the face of the quarter for generations. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch beneath its talons. This side of the coin features the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. The S mint mark, denoting its origin in San Francisco, is positioned just below the olive branch, making this particular issue a fascinating piece of West Coast minting history.
