The 1954 Washington Quarter proof coin represents a superb example of mid-twentieth-century American coin production. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this issue features a composition of ninety percent silver, containing approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of the precious metal. With a mintage of 233,300 pieces, these proof coins were specially prepared to achieve a level of detail and finish far superior to the standard quarters circulating in daily commerce at the time. On the obverse, the coin displays the left-facing portrait of George Washington, a design created by John Flanagan. The profile is accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with the date 1954 positioned at the bottom. This familiar image has become one of the most recognizable portraits in American numismatic history. The reverse of the quarter presents a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle grips a bundle of arrows in its talons, positioned above a pair of olive branches, symbolizing both strength and peace. Surrounding this central motif are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR, alongside the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
