In 1960, the United States Mint produced a classic quarter dollar struck in 90 percent silver. This particular coin, preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, contains approximately 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a bygone era of American coinage when circulating quarters were made of solid silver, long before the transition to copper-nickel clad compositions. The obverse of the coin displays the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This iconic portrait was created by sculptor John Flanagan. Surrounding the bust are the traditional inscriptions, including the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" positioned to the left of Washington's neck, and the date 1960 anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, Flanagan designed a powerful heraldic eagle with its wings outspread. The eagle clutches a bundle of arrows in its talons, symbolizing strength and military readiness, while an olive branch rests beneath, representing a desire for peace. This combination of symbolic elements creates a balanced and enduring piece of mid-twentieth-century American numismatic art.
