In 1961, the United States Mint produced a striking proof edition of its standard quarter dollar, composed of 90 percent silver with an actual precious metal content of 0.17875 troy ounces. This particular specimen has achieved a high certification of Proof 67, highlighting the sharp details and mirror-like finishes characteristic of the era's finest minting processes. The obverse of the coin displays the left-facing portrait of the nation's first president, George Washington, a design created by John Flanagan. This iconic imagery was originally introduced in 1932 to honor the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth, replacing the previous Standing Liberty design. Following its debut, the series paused briefly during a production gap in 1933, but resumed in 1934 and has continued annually ever since. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle stands with its wings fully spread. The inscriptions on this side clearly designate the issuing authority as the United States of America, along with the denomination of Quarter Dollar. The traditional motto, E Pluribus Unum, is also nestled within the reverse design, completing a classic piece of mid-century American coinage.
