In 1961, the United States Mint produced a limited number of proof Washington quarters, showcasing the classic design with a level of detail and polish not found on circulating coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this particular specimen is certified in a remarkable Proof 68 condition, a grade that highlights its sharp strikes and mirror-like surfaces. The obverse of the quarter displays a left-facing portrait of George Washington, a design created by John Flanagan. This depiction of the first president was originally introduced in 1932 to mark the bicentennial of Washington's birth, replacing the previous Standing Liberty design. Aside from a single gap year in 1933 when no quarters were produced, the series has been minted annually since 1934. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle spreads its wings, a powerful symbol of the nation. The reverse design also features the traditional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." This 1961 issue contains 0.17875 troy ounces of silver, combining precious metal content with a beautifully preserved piece of mid-century American numismatic history.
