The obverse of the coin presents the left-facing profile of George Washington, the nation's first president. This portrait, created by sculptor John Flanagan, is accompanied by the familiar national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year 1962. On the reverse, Flanagan composed a powerful heraldic scene.
