In 1964, the United States Mint produced a striking version of its classic twenty-five cent piece, minted in 90 percent silver. This particular coin is a Gem Proof specimen, representing the pinnacle of the coining process from the Philadelphia Mint. Because proof coins are struck using specially polished dies and planchets, they exhibit a mirror-like finish and sharp details that bring the classic mid-century design to life. The obverse of the coin features the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, designed by John Flanagan. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above his portrait, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST sits nestled under his chin. The year 1964 is clearly stamped at the bottom, marking the final year of the regular circulating 90 percent silver quarters. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with wings spread wide, gripping a bundle of arrows and perched above an olive branch. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR frame the eagle, while the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is positioned directly above the eagle's head, celebrating the unity of the nation.
