The 1968 Washington quarter represents a key chapter in the evolution of United States circulating coinage. Struck at the Denver Mint, this specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its mid-twentieth-century design. While the Washington quarter series first debuted on August 1, 1932, to replace the Standing Liberty design, the coins underwent a massive structural transformation just a few years before this piece was minted. Following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965, the United States transitioned away from silver alloy for its quarters. This 1968 issue features the modern composition that resulted from that legislation: a cupronickel clad copper format. This dual-metal construction gives the coin its distinct copper-core edge while maintaining a bright, durable nickel-alloy surface. The obverse features the classic portrait of George Washington with the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST and the 1968 date. On the reverse, the traditional eagle design is accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR.
