The 1970 Washington quarter represents a fascinating era in American coinage, carrying a design that originally debuted in 1932 to mark two centuries since the birth of George Washington. This iconic portrait of the first United States president replaced the Standing Liberty design and quickly became a staple of daily commerce. While the design remained familiar, the internal makeup of the coin underwent a massive transformation just five years prior to this issue. Following the legislative changes of the Coinage Act of 1965, the United States transitioned away from silver coinage.
