1970-S Washington Quarter Gem Proof
The Washington quarter first emerged in 1932, initially created to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. This new design took the place of the Standing Liberty quarter and officially debuted on August 1, 1932. While the coin originally contained silver, a major shift occurred in 1965 when the metallic makeup was altered to a cupronickel clad copper composition. This 1970 specimen from the San Francisco Mint showcases the modern clad era in a stunning Gem Proof finish. The obverse displays the familiar profile of the first United States president, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1970 date. The reverse features the traditional eagle design surrounded by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR.
