In 1971, the Denver Mint struck a base metal dollar coin that serves as a dual tribute to a legendary American leader and one of humanity's greatest achievements. This coin contains no silver, representing a transition to clad composition for circulating dollar coins. The brilliant uncirculated finish highlights the bold details of a design that looks both backward at recent history and forward into the cosmos. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Surrounding his profile are the classic inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1971 date and the D mint mark representing the Denver facility. On the reverse, the coin features a design adapted from the Apollo XI insignia. An eagle is depicted carrying an olive branch as it descends toward the surface of the moon. In the background, planet Earth is visible, specifically showing the continent of North America. This side of the coin also bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside the country name and the face value, ONE DOLLAR.
