1971-D Washington Quarter BU
The 1971-D Washington quarter represents a fascinating chapter in the evolution of United States coinage. Struck at the Denver Mint, this twenty-five cent piece showcases the familiar profile of the nation's first president. The design originally debuted in 1932, introduced to honor the two-hundredth anniversary of George Washington's birth. This portrait replaced the previous Standing Liberty design and officially entered circulation on August 1, 1932. While the obverse portrait remained a staple of American pockets, the physical makeup of the coin underwent a massive transformation prior to the minting of this 1971 issue. Following the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965, the United States Mint transitioned away from silver alloy. This 1971-D specimen features the modern composition of cupronickel clad over a pure copper core, a metallurgical change that redefined the weight, sound, and appearance of the quarter. Preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this coin retains its original mint luster. The obverse displays the portrait of Washington accompanied by the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST, while the reverse features the traditional denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR and the name of the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
