In 1972, the United States Mint produced a circulating dollar coin that serves as a dual tribute to a major military leader and a monumental leap in space exploration. This coin, known colloquially as the Ike Dollar, marked the return of the dollar denomination to regular circulation for the first time since the Peace Dollar era. This particular issue contains no silver content, utilizing a base metal composition instead. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of General and President Dwight David Eisenhower. Surrounding his profile are the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1972 date. Because this piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it does not bear a mint mark. On the reverse, the design celebrates the achievements of the Apollo XI lunar mission by replicating its official insignia. An eagle is depicted in flight above the surface of the moon, clutching an olive branch in its talons. In the background, the planet Earth is visible, with the outline of the North American continent clearly defined. The reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, ONE DOLLAR.
