In 1972, the Denver Mint produced a clad dollar coin that stands as a tribute to both a celebrated American leader and one of humanity's greatest achievements. This issue, known to many as the Ike Dollar, represents the first time the United States minted a dollar coin for general circulation since the conclusion of the Peace Dollar series. Strikingly, this version contains no silver, utilizing a base metal composition instead. The obverse of the coin presents a left-facing profile of General and President Dwight David Eisenhower. Positioned above his likeness is the word LIBERTY, while the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST is placed below his chin. The year 1972 is inscribed at the bottom, with the D mint mark of the Denver Mint situated just above the date. On the reverse, the design honors the historic Apollo XI moon landing mission by replicating its famous insignia. An eagle is depicted in flight over the cratered surface of the moon, clutching an olive branch in its talons. In the background, the planet Earth is visible, clearly showing the outline of North America.
