In 1974, the Denver Mint produced a clad dollar coin that honors both leadership on Earth and exploration in space. This Brilliant Uncirculated piece features a dual-layered composition, with an outer layer of copper and nickel bonded to an interior core of pure copper. The physical heft of this large-format coin provides a substantial canvas for its bold mid-twentieth-century designs. The obverse side presents a strong profile portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Surrounding his likeness are the traditional American inscriptions of freedom and faith, with LIBERTY positioned above and IN GOD WE TRUST placed below his chin. The year 1974 is anchored at the bottom, accompanied by the Denver "D" mint mark. On the reverse, the coin transitions from presidential tribute to cosmic achievement, replicating the official insignia of the Apollo XI space mission. An eagle is depicted descending toward the lunar surface, carrying an olive branch in its talons, while the planet Earth hangs in the distant sky. This symbolic scene is framed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the face value of ONE DOLLAR.
